Chaucer, Geoffrey. The Legende of Goode Women [manuscript]. Verso of final leaf: "Transcribed in the year 1898 in the Island of Jersey". The calligrapher & artist is unknown, but a small device on this page appears to include the letters "TEDY".
Ink and watercolor on Whatman paper. 110 pages, with text or an illustration on the recto and verso of all. Eighteen full page illustrations (a few double-page), along with eleven 1/2 or 1/4 page illustrations. All pages with calligraphed text have patterned watercolor borders, each unique. Eight string-bound gatherings of leaves; final leaf ("Here Endeth...") is loose. Measures approx. 8" x 11.25".
Browning and some spots to front and rear cover. Minor ink transfer to a small amount of pages.
An absolutely stunning art nouveau manuscript, recounting the stories of Cleopatra, Thisbe, Dido, Hypsipyle and Medea, Lucrece, Ariadne, Philomela, Phyllis, and Hypermnestra.
