Eight addresses given throughout the United States form the chapters. Titles of Ashbee's lectures include "On the Purpose of the National Trust", "The Abbeys of England in the Light of a Lesson in Citizenship", "Chelsea: or the Village of Palaces" and "Of Certain Aspects of English Apathy".
